Atypeography is a unique approach to typography that reimagines traditional letterforms, moving away from rigid straight lines and conventional curves. Instead, it explores more organic, fluid shapes, often inspired by natural elements and artistic expression. This system embraces the idea of typographic forms as “artifacts”—each character representing something that evolves and adapts, rather than adhering strictly to geometric norms. The focus is on creating a sense of playfulness and dynamism, where type can be seen as a living, breathing entity rather than a static design element.

Instead of A’s and B’s styled from geometric grids, each character emerges from the shape, texture, and structure of a real-world source—here, the rich morphology of the eukaryotic cell.

Living Blueprints: Eukaryotic cells are packed with membrane-bound organelles—mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi stacks, lysosomes—each with its own contour and “pattern.”

Form & Function: Just as every organelle has a role (energy production, protein folding, transport), each letter in ATYPE carries a distinctive silhouette and internal motif (dots, lines, folds) drawn from that organelle’s anatomy.

Biomimetic Play: By borrowing the cell’s curves, bulges, and perforations, ATYPE connects letterforms back to the microscopic world, giving text a sense of life and motion.

Below is a breakdown of how I translated organelle features into a cohesive, modular alphabet. With this system, any new glyph automatically “fits” the family: you pick the circular cell shell, place the central nucleus dot, then arrange the right combination of bars/dots for the intended letter. The result is a living, breathing alphabet.
