HIVE 3.5 is a speculative yet functional prototype of a Web3-powered environmental engagement platform — where conservation meets gamification, and every action leaves a digital trace. Built in collaboration with Northumbrian Water, Rivers Trust, and Fracas Digital, the project turns everyday people into stewards of their local environments using missions, NFTs, and a decentralised proof-of-impact system. By blending geolocation, storytelling, and verified ecological data, HIVE 3.5 imagines a future where public participation fuels both joy and regeneration.

Participants take on roles like Scouts, Gardeners, Makers, and Explorers — completing missions such as litter-picking, water testing, and biodiversity logging. Actions are verified through GPS and sensors, recorded on the blockchain as part of a shared "Citizen Chain" of impact. Completing missions unlocks evolving NFTs, new challenges, and rewards.

The NFT collection celebrates real environmental changemakers — from Greta Thunberg and Jane Goodall to Boyan Slat and Junko Tabei — alongside cultural icons like The Lambton Worm. Each NFT acts as both a reward and an educational tool, inspiring participants through the stories and legacies of diverse conservation figures.

Inspired by geocaching, HIVE 3.5 deploys a blend of physical and digital activations across Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Missions vary from short-term challenges like 24-hour river clean-ups to long-term monitoring efforts such as soil sampling or outfall tracking. Each completed task unlocks tokenised rewards and contributes to the larger 'greenprint' — a visual NFT map composed of ecological curiosities, local business touchpoints, and citizen-generated data. Participation becomes a playful, purposeful journey through the Ecocene.

HIVE 3.5 isn't just a pilot — it's a proof-of-concept for a decentralised stewardship model. By empowering citizens with tools, missions, and recognition, it reframes conservation from a top-down responsibility to a participatory movement. Local businesses are integrated into the NFT reward system to promote economic resilience alongside ecological care.
